A late Eoin Doyle penalty denied Preston North End victory as they drew 3-3 with Chesterfield at Deepdale.
The Lilywhites let a three goal lead slip away as hat-trick hero Doyle fuelled the Spireites comeback.
Recalled midfielder Alan Browne opened the scoring in the seventh minute before Joe Garner mopped up a misjudged back pass and swept home the second in the 15th minute.
The Lilywhites were 3-0 up in 28 minutes as young midfielder Josh Brownhill fired home at the back post.
But Chesterfield fought back as talisman Doyle bagged his second successive hat-trick.
The striker scored from the penalty spot in stoppage time after Garner handled in the PNE box.
Before the match PNE boss Grayson announced the signing of England U20 striker Callum Robinson from Aston Villa.
The striker - who has made five appearances for the Premier League club -signed for the Lilywhites on a youth loan until October, 18.
And the youngster came off the bench in the 66th minute to make his debut.
Grayson made three changes to the side that lost 3-1 at Walsall on Saturday for tonight’s League One fixture.
Brownhill,Browne and Will Hayhurst were all recalled to the starting XI.
Chris Humprey, Little and John Welsh were all absent due to injuries.
And Jack King moved to the bench as Grayson switches to a 4-3-3 formation.
Grayson has bolstered his attack by signing Robinson after losing Jordan Hugill and Andy Little against Walsall on Saturday.
Little sustained a hamstring injury and Hugill - who came off the bench to replace the Northern Irish international - served the first of a three match ban tonight after he was dismissed for violent conduct at the Bescot Stadium.
PNE started brightly and in just the first minute a Garner flick-on nearly found the path of Hayhurst and Paul Gallagher in the box but the ball wouldn’t fall for them.
In the sixth minute Hayhurst swept the ball into the box and Garner nodded the ball down into the ground but Spireites keeper Lee easily saved the rising ball.
Moments later Calum Woods teed Gallagher up in a plum position in the Chesterfield box but the striker’s shot was deflected wide of goal.
But Browne - who returned to the starting XI after missing out against Walsall - pounced on a Hayhurst cross and nodded the ball beyond Tommy Lee to open the scoring in the seventh minute.
Daniel Johnson clipped the ball over the PNE defence in the 14th minute but Doyle was thwarted by Jones who sprinted out to the edge of his area.
But PNE doubled their lead in the 15th minute as an advanced Brownhill attempted to latch on to a Chesterfield back pass. The ball evaded the young midfielder but the ball fell to Garner just outside the area. Chesterfield keeper Lee was left stranded outside of his box and the striker coolly raced to the right before firing a low shot into the back of the net in the 15th minute.
And Brownhill added his name to the score sheet in the 28th minute. Garner headed Woods’ deep cross from the right wing back across goal and the young midfielder made no mistake to fire home at the back post.
But Chesterfield pulled a goal back thanks to a sublime piece of skill by hit-man Doyle. The striker latched on to Jay O’shea’s chip and sweetly lifted the ball over Jones in the 31st minute.
And they nearly reduced the deficit again in the 41st minute as an unmarked Romy Boko blazed Doyle’s flick-on from Sam Clucas’ cross over the bar from just six-yards-out.
The visitors started the second 45 brightly and Doyle held the ball up in the six yard box before teeing up an on-running O’Shea but the substitute smashed the ball wide of Jones’ right hand post in the 47th minute.
In the 54th minute Sam Morsy’s long-range shot just flew over Jones bar.
Garner was furious after being clattered by Ian Evatt outside the box. The striker felt the Chesterfield captain went in too hard and the referee booked the defender in the 58th minute.
And new loan signing Robinson replaced Gallagher in the 66th minute to make his début at Deepdale.
And the England U20 international was fouled by Jimmy Ryan as he attempted to sprint past him and the Chesterfield player was subsequently booked by referee Nigel Miller.
Another PNE youngster Brownhill stung the palms of Chesterfield keeper Lee as his fierce 25-yard strike flew towards goal.
But the visitors pulled a goal back back moments later as Johnson stormed down the left and put the ball on a plate for Doyle at the back post. The in-form striker pounced and smashed the ball past Jones in the 80th minute.
A fierce Garner header stung Lee’s palms as the keeper dived to stop the striker nodding Kyel Reid’s fierce cross home in the 88th minute.
But Garner was in the action at the other end as he handled in the box in the 90th minute and the referee awarded a penalty. Doyle stepped up and smashed the spot kick straight down the middle to seal his hat-trick in the 91st minute.
