Former Preston North End winger Chris Humphrey retires from football due to injury.

Humphrey made 133 appearances for North End in a three-and-a-half-stay at Deepdale, scoring eight goals, and was in the 2014/15 promotion-winning squad.

He joined PNE on a Bosman from Motherwell in May 2013, with him one of Simon Grayson's first signings as Preston manager.

The Jamaica international played as a winger and a wing-back for North End, displaying good pace down the right hand side of the pitch.

Humphrey left Preston in January 2017 to join Hibernian on a short-term deal, before joining Bury later that year.

He spent part of last season on loan from Bury at National League side Barrow.

Without a club since the summer, Humphrey has been doing some coaching work at PNE's academy at Cottam.

He was the pitch-side guest at half-time of North End's recent clash with West Bromwich Albion.

Humphrey announced on Twitter that he had decided to retire from playing because of injury, one he'd had problems with since his PNE days.

He posted: "I've been playing for the last year or so with a lot of pain and I have decided that I can't play through that pain anymore.

"I would like to thank all the fans at every club that I have been at, whether you have cheered me or booed me - I've appreciated you all over my career and I've always given 100 per cent every game."

Addressing his time at North End, Humphrey wrote: "A massive than you to the Preston fans who welcomed me to the club with open arms and also cheered and supported me every single game.

"Obviously the promotion is the highlight of my time at Preston.

"It was good to see the fans get to enjoy a trip to Wembley for a change and get the win.

"I wish every every single club I've played for the very best and I hope you all do well in the future."
