ON THIS DAY: David Beckham scores on his Preston debut
But few would have imagined that the Manchester United loanee, one David Beckham, who netted for Preston North End in their 2-2 draw with Doncaster 22 years ago today would go on to be the player and household name he became.
It was the then 19-year-old’s first league goal, coming after arriving off the bench at half-time in the Division Three clash in front of 9,624 fans at Deepdale.

In total Beckham made just the five appearances for the Lilywhites, David Moyes amongst his team mates, with Sir Alex Ferguson bringing him back to Old Trafford after a month despite Gary Peters hoping his stay could be extended.
He could have been the difference in PNE’s promotion bid, the Lilywhites missing out in the play-off semi-finals to Bury.
The rest though, as they say, is history.
