Chorley coach JonanthanSmith calls time on decade-long stint

Following the departure of club skipper Andy Teague earlier this month, Smith has decided to sever his ties at Victory Park to seek a fresh challenge.

The former Accrington Stanley defender arrived at the club in 2009 initially as a player before moving on to the coaching staff.

He has been a valued member of the backroom team over the past decade – working under Flitcroft at first before serving successors Matt Jansen and Jamie Vermiglio.

Over the period, the Magpies haven risen from the NPL First Division North to the National League.

Despite this season which saw the Magpies finish bottom of the table, there is very little to tarnish his time at the club.

Smith said; “After 10 unbelievable years at Chorley, I have decided to leave and take on a new challenge.

“It has not been an easy decision to make such is my love for the club,the spectators and everyone at Chorley.

“Although last season was hard for all involved, on the whole it has been a hugely successful time with three promotions, FA Cup runs and plenty of play-off games.

“I leave with the best wishes of manager Jamie Vermiglio and assistant manager Andy Preece and the Board of directors. That means a great deal. My family hold the club very close to our hearts.”

Vermiglio paid tribute to his assistant on chorleyfc.com: “Unfortunately from our point of view, Smudger has been offered an opportunity he can’t turn down,” Vermiglio told. “He has been an incredible servant to Chorley FC; an integral part of the backroom team under Garry and Matt, and absolutely vital for me.

“To be able to work with people you implicitly trust in football is a huge thing and to have that strong relationship is brilliant.

“I know the decision wasn’t an easy one and he’s wrestled with it for a while. He will be a friend for life and I wish him an unreserved amount of luck in his new position.”
