Charnock Richard ready for historic FA Cup tie
Charnock Richard are preparing for a historic weekend as the club face their first-ever taste of FA Cup football.
After their promotion to the North West Counties Premier Division, the Mossie Park side have qualified for the famous competition for the first time.
And though they are several hurdles away from the first round proper and a potential huge clash with a league side, the mood is jubilant ahead of the home clash with Peni-stone Church on Saturday.
Church have followed a similar path to Richard in recent years, having clinched promotion to the Northern Counties East League Premier Division last term.
Now the duo meet in a Roses clash, and Charnock Richard chairman Shaun Tootell hopes the whole community comes out to support the club on their big day, as they hope to taste a bit of the magic of the cup.
He said: “Two to three years ago we were playing in the West Lancashire League, and playing in the FA Cup was something we could not have even dreamed of.
“Ever since 2010 we have been working hard to reach this level, and now we are about to play in the FA Cup for the first time - which is a great achievement.
“Penistone will be a tough side.
“They are very similar to ourselves and have been on a similar journey in recent years, but we have home advantage and hopefully we can progress and see where it takes us.
“We hope the whole community come out and support us.
“Over recent seasons we have seen an increase in supporters as we have progressed up the leagues, and with it being a big weekend, we hope more people can come down and get behind the lads.”
Tickets are £5 for adults, £3 for concessions aged over 60, and U16s can get on for free if accompanied by an adult.
One of manager Andy Westwell’s side was recognised for his form on the pitch last term by the league.
Striker Carl Grimshaw was presented with the Hallmark Security League Division One leading goalscorer award for season 2016-17 on Saturday, prior to the club’s friendly match with Stockport Town at Mossie Park.
Goal machine Grimshaw has netted a mammoth 335 goals in 283 starts in all competitions for the club after joining from Eagley in the 2009-10 season.
