Brownhill, 20, is out of contract in the summer and has been subject to media speculation linking him with other clubs - Scottish clubs Celtic and Rangers the latest.

However, Preston manager Simon Grayson revealed the club were close to an agreement with Brownhill about a new deal.

In his pre-match press conference at the Springfields training ground on Thursday morning, Grayson said: “The loan at Barnsley is working really well for Josh and working really well for us because he needed some game time.

“We think a lot about Josh and he will come back to us at some point.

“We are close to doing a new contract with him which was something we were looking to do over the last few weeks.

“That will be another bonus for us and he gives us another option.”

Brownhill mmade his PNE debut as a 17-year-old in October 2013 and has made 64 appearances for them.

He joined Barnsley on loan in January and has played his part in their excellent run of form which has taken them from the relegation zone to the edge of the League One play-off zone.

The Yorkshire outfit have also reached the final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Wembley.
