Danny Forbes’s first half goal gave Bamber Bridge a well-deserved 1-0 victory over National League North outfit Farsley Celtic at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium.

Jamie Milligan’s men were originally set to host Ashton Athletic, only for the match to be cancelled on Saturday morning due to what the club referred to as “unforeseen circumstances”, with Farsley agreeing to make the trip instead.

Brig started the game brightly, Callum King-Harmes beating his man and forcing a last-ditch block from defender Tom Allan.

Danny Roccia was then called into action for the first time in the afternoon, the Brig stopper tipping over a fierce effort from Dave Syers, before then getting in the way of Jimmy Spencer’s close range header.

Brig then went down the other end and took the lead on 39 minutes, Forbes latching onto a crisp through ball and calmly placing the ball into the corner of the net.

Farsley put the pressure on throughout the second half, with Allan heading the ball past Roccia only to see his goal ruled out due to a penalty box infringement.

Spencer was then denied by an excellent block from Danny Wisdom, who had started the match in midfield but dropped back into central defence for its conclusion.

The resulting Farsley corner caused problems in the Brig box, the ball ricocheting out to Adam Clayton who was thwarted by a fine low save by Roccia.

Roccia was then out quickly to deny Ben Atkinson late on, before King-Harmes ran clear for Brig only to be stopped by the offside flag.

Brig held on to record a confidence-boosting victory, their first at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium since pre-season began.

They kick off their Northern Premier League Premier Division campaign on September 19, with last season’s opening day opponents Matlock Town the visitors.
