Ellie Hilton of Croston FC made history by taking advantage of the FA’s 2015 decision to allow girls to play in mixed youth football –and she is the only girl in the country to do so.
The Football Association has monitored her progress for the last two years by sending various representatives to watch her play.
And they hope that Hilton’s experience will inspire other young female players to follow her example.
A Croston girl, Hilton has played in mixed teams for Croston for the past 12 years.
And the 18-year-old has enjoyed her football, especially the last twoseasons when she has played in the Lancashire Sunday League.
She played 12 league and cup games for the club this season and they signed off with a 2-0 win at Tarleton Corinthians.
Hilton has played football at Croston since the age of six and she played in the Lancashire Sunday League with approval of the management committee.
She said: “I haven’t been treated differently by anyone and this is all I ever wanted – to be treated with respect and this is a credit to the League and its member clubs and players.”
Now Hilton has gained a scholarship to play and study in America at Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee next year.
