Chris Rogers hit his first Specsavers County Championship half-century for Somerset on the third morning of the match against Lancashire at Taunton.

The 38-year-old Australian, appointed captain in succession to Marcus Trescothick, was unbeaten on 54 at lunch, having reached fifty off 80 balls, with 4 fours.

Replying to Lancashire’s 493, the hosts made sedate progress on a flat pitch after losing Trescothick for five to the first ball of the second over when he appeared to play too early at Kyle Jarvis and presented a simple return catch.

Opener Tom Abell and Rogers took the score to 76 before Abell was lbw for 29, pushing forward to the left-arm spin of Simon Kerrigan.

But Rogers looked untroubled in the sunshine and a healthy third-day crowd at the Cooper Associates County Ground saw him lead his side to 101 for two off 39 overs at lunch.
