Weekend cricket round-up

Chasing 128 for victory, David Makinson’s men were bowled out for 92 in the 20th over. A good opening partnership between professional Pabasura Waduge (21) and Karl Cross (28) gave Leyland a platform to build on.

However, once they had departed, Leyland lost eight wickets for 51 runs – only 
Andrew Makinson (10) managed to reach double figures. Opposition pro Obus Pienaar took 3-15.

Earlier, Pienaar had struck 64 off just 50 balls – a knock which included nine boundaries – in Netherfield’s score of 127-7. Will Jacques chipped in with 3-26.

Leyland won through to the final by beating Penrith at the semi-final stage.

Tom Reece (23), Andrew Makinson (31) and James Rounding (20) helped them to 109-8 after being inserted.

Ross Bretherton then took 4-15 and David Makinson 3-11 as Penrith were restricted to 93-8.

It proved to be a disappointing weekend for Leyland as the day before they were surprisingly beaten by neighbours Preston at West Cliff in the Northern League Division One.

The visitors paid the penalty for a poor batting display as they were dismissed for just 97 inside the 39th over.

Only Tom Reece (35) managed to come to terms with the conditions, while Rizwan Ali took 5-34.

In reply, the hosts cruised to victory inside 17 overs and for the loss of three wickets. Skipper Sajid Patel finished unbeaten on 42.

Chorley came off a decisive second best in a rain-affected tussle against Kendal at Windsor Park.

Opener Zack McCaskie’s half-century put Kendal in the driving seat and despite a late three wicket burst by reliable Ian Oakes, the hosts continued to make light of the damp conditions and posted a challenging 145 for 6.

An opening stand of 34 between Oakes and Ed Moulton briefly raised visiting victory hopes, but it proved to be a false dawn and a collapse followed as any hopes of a win evaporated.

With that restricted number of overs, Chorley could still have claimed a draw, but it was not to be as they subsided alarmingly to 75 all out, Kendal claiming the last wicket with 3.2 overs to spare.

Elsewhere, leaders Netherfield extended their lead at the top courtesy of a 28-run win at Fleetwood.

St Annes went level on points with second-placed Chorley by beating Penrith, while Blackpool dropped to fourth after losing to rock-bottom Morecambe.

Sam Henderson took 8-47 as Barrown defeated Lancaster.

Mark Smith and Matthew Smith played prominent roles in Fulwood and Broughton’s victory over Croston which kept them top of the Moore and Smalley Palace Shield.

Matthew Smith collected a six-wicket haul to remove Croston’s middle order.

The skipper Mark Smith hit an unbeaten half-century as F&B successfully chased the target set for them.

With Longridge, Garstang and Vernon Carus winning in the chasing pack, it was a big result for the title holders as the campaign moved into its second half.

After winning the toss, F&B invited Croston to bat on the Highfield track.

After a shaky start, Ian Dickinson (30) and Sam Marsh (31) pushed the score along for the visitors.

But once they were gone, the home side got on top and Croston were 116 all out.

Matthew Smith returned 6-31 from 8.4 overs, Chris Brookes taking 3-28.

In reply, Mark Smith hit eight fours on his way to 53 not out, facing 57 deliveries.

F&B clinched victory in the 21st over, scoring 117-5.

Longridge, in second place, beat Great Eccleston by 43 runs at Chipping Road.

In a clash reduced to 20 overs per side, Longridge were asked to bat first and put 145-4 on the board.

James Whitehead scored 40 and Luke Platt 37 not out.

Great Ecc were restricted to 102-8 in reply, Ashfaque 
Patel top scoring with 27.

A ruthless Vernon Carus bowling display was behind their nine-wicket win over Thornton Cleveleys.

They skittled Thornton out for just 48 at Factory Lane, Paul Hayton taking 5-22 and Matthew Timms 3-19.

Vernons replied with 50-1 to claim the win – Ian Dunn unbeaten on 24.

Garstang won by 89 runs against Torrisholme.

Mark Walling struck 46 and Michael Wellings 44 in the home side’s tally of 167-8.

Torrisholme were bowled out for 78 in reply, Ian Walling and Danny Gilbert collecting three wickets apiece.

Penwortham claimed a four-wicket victory against Freckleton at Middleforth.

Batting first after winning the toss, visitors Freck were 113 all out.

Daniel Fisher scored the bulk of their runs, hitting eight fours and a six on his way to a knock of 48.

There were four wickets for Penwortham’s Neil Patel, with Ashley Billington and Thomas Wilson claiming a pair each.

Martin Hewitt stuck three sixes and four fours in a score of 42 as Penwortham knocked off the runs in 32.2 overs.

They finished on 117-6, Jonathan Hothersall 29 not out.

Eccleston beaten Rufford by five wickets in their clash at Doctors Lane.

Rufford batted first and were 70 all out, Stuart White claiming 6-13.

In reply, Eccleston were 71-5, Matthew Ashcroft (24) and Paul McCauley (21).
