Chorley upset Northern League title hopefuls Blackpool

Chorley inflicted a rare defeat on Northern Premier League title-chasers Blackpool.

They won on their visit to Stanley Park by seven wickets, only a second league loss of the summer for the hosts.

The decision of Chorley skipper Andrew Holdsworth to elect to field after winning the toss, paid off.

His side bowled out Blackpool for 128 in 45.5 overs.

The wickets were shared round, with Stuart Naden, Ed Moulton, Will Moulton and Gaurav Dhar taking two apiece.

Richard Gleeson guested for Blackpool, with the Northants man bowled for five by Will Moulton.

In reply, Chorley knocked off the runs inside 41 overs, posting 131-3. Gayan Maneeshan hit an unbeaten 50, his stay at the crease featuring four fours and a six. Wian Van Zyl scored 36 and Will Moulton 20 not out.

Defeat left Blackpool 11 points shy of Netherfield, the league leaders drawing their all-Cumbrian clash against Penrith.

Netherfield were 225-8, Penrith replying with 223-7.

Leyland squeezed home to victory against Garstang by two runs at Fox Lane. Invited to bat first, Leyland were 161 all out in 49.4 overs. The bulk of the runs were scored by Umar Waheed and Henry Thompson who struck 53 and 46 respectively.

Garstang’s Travis Pieters and Ian Walling were in good form with the ball – Pieters took 5-29 and Walling 4-51.

The visitors got so close to their target but lost their last wicket with two balls left.

Mark Walling had led their charge with an unbeaten 74 but ran out of partners.

Thompson was Leyland’s chief wicket taker with 5-51.

Former England Test player Simon Kerrigan (left) was in fine form with the bat in Fulwood and Broughton’s draw at Morecambe. Kerrigan struck 108 not out as F&B put 263-4 on the board in the Woodhill Lane clash.

Three sixes and 10 fours left his bat, Matthew Smith adding 55 to the scorecard.

Victory evaded them though, as Morecambe held out on 218-7 in reply – Luke Jongwe hit 77.

St Annes kept in the title hunt with a 28-run win over Fleetwood at Broadwater.

Amar Ullah struck 55 in St Annes’ first innings tally of 193-9 – Ullah then took 4-48 to bowl Fleetwood out for 155.

Preston were beaten by nine wickets at Barrow.

They posted 96-9, a target Barrow chased in 14.5 overs scoring 100-1.Meanwhile, Simon Kerrigan guided Fulwood and Broughton into the second round of the Benchmarx Kitchens and Joinery Trophy on Sunday.

The Lancashire ace carried hit bat through the innings as F&B comfortably defeated St Annes by six wickets at Highfield.

Chasing 161 for victory, Kerrigan struck a fine unbeaten 75 with skipper Mark Smith contributing 31.

Earlier, Chris Brookes and Arbab Munir had taken three wickets apiece as the visitors were bowled out for 160.

Chorley’s interest in the competition is at an end after suffering a disappointing 50-run loss against Penrith at Windsor Park.

Visiting professional Ashwin Hebbar was the difference between the sides. He scored a brilliant 133, his knock included 12 fours and six sixes.Greg Cameron hit 44 as penrith closed on 243-6.

In reply, Chorley were all out for 193. Hebbar and Greg Cameron took three wickets each and Gayan Maneeshan top-scored with 42.

Garstang moved into the next round after getting the better of the Northern League’s whipping boys Preston at West Cliff.

The home side were routed for 102 all out, with Ian Walling taking 3-12. Travis Pieters then scored 39 as the visitors cruised home for the loss of five wickets with 13.1 overs to spare.

Kendal moved through to the next round after a comprehensive 67-run win over Fleetwood at Shap Road.

Lachlan Stewart and Shubham Kajuria scored 71 and 75 respectively as the home side posted 268-7. James Park chipped-in with 43, while Liam Castellas impressed with the ball, taking 4-20 off three overs.

In reply, Fleetwood failed to keep up with the required run rate, especially after Neels Bergh departed for a 67-ball 70, which included 10 boundaries. They eventually closed on 201-8.

In the final match, Morecambe slumped to a 159-run defeat to Barrow after being dismissed for a paltry 61, with Gary Collins taking 4-14.

They had earlier been set 221 for victory after Robin Adams’ score of 74. Daniel Edwards returned figures of 4-19.

There will be no Lancashire Knockout Cup glory for Leyland this year after they were beaten at Clifton by nine wickets at the quarter-final stage of the competition.
