Cadets follow in juniors' footsteps

JUST a week after Preston won the North West Junior Table Tennis League, the next generation of youngsters claimed first place in the regional competition of the National Cadet League.

The squad comprises the fantastic foursome of Alex Shuttleworth, George Hesmondhalgh and Aakanksha and Anupam Tripathi.

They went into their eighth and final match knowing a 4-2 success over Garstang A would be enough to take the title.

And after overcoming some initial nerves, they completed the necessary 4-2 result to finish top of the table by just one point from Morecambe A.

On the individual front, Shuttleworth topped the averages after winning 17 of his 18 singles.

Brother and sister Anupam and Aakanksha Tripathi both won 13 of their 16 games.

And Hesmondhalgh contributed 11 wins from 16 games to complete a memorable team effort.
