Preston’s big-punching cruiserweight headed into battle against Elvis Dube in Manchester on Friday night on the back of three straight first-round knockouts.

But the unbeaten 29-year-old was made to work by the durable veteran at the Victoria Warehouse as he completed a full six rounds for the first time, taking the decision 60-54 on referee Mark Lyson’s card.

“It would be good to get everyone out there in the first round and it’s always good to get knockouts,” said Chambers, trained and managed by Matthew Hatton and now 6-0.

“But I’ve had six fights now and I’ve got the three knockouts on my record and I’ve got a full six rounds in as well.

“It ticks off another box and it’s all about learning.

“It was good to fight someone smaller as well and he was pretty awkward.

“It’s good to get different tests. I just can’t wait for the next one now.”

Chambers dominated from the off on a show promoted by Preston’s Johnney Roye and his MTK Manchester outfit but came across an opponent who would not be moved, Dube surviving the full 18 minutes in what was his 76th professional fight.

“He took every last punch,” said the former Larches and Savick ABC man, now based in Tameside.

“I thought I might be able to knock him out but when you look at his record he’s only been stopped six times or something like that.

“I had a feeling it might go the full six but I still planted a good few shots and he took them well.

“His head’s like a rock to be honest. I’m glad I got the full six rounds and it’s on to the next one.”

Having turned professional later than some, Chambers is keen to get on with fight number seven.

“I’ll probably have a week or two out and let my knuckles heal and then get back on it,” he said.

“It might be January when I’m out next now. I’ll speak to Matthew and see how things are looking.”
