Amateur boxing champion Scott Fitzgerald will be bidding to move a step nearer to an appearance at the Liverpool Arena on Saturday.
The Larches and Savick Amateur Boxing Club fighter takes on Boarshaw’s Jamie Carr in the ABA North West Area semi-finals.
Fitzgerald, who was crowned national champion in the light middleweight category last year, opened his campaign this year with a comprehensive win over Haroon Rashid last weekend.
The 22-year-old star – who is competing in the 69kg weight category this year – is a heavy favourite for the fight against Carr, which will take place at Walkden Sixth Form Centre, in Worsley.
Should Fitzgerald win his his next two fights to become North West champion, he will almost certainly be seeded to go through to the national finals which take place at the end of this month in Liverpool.
His dad Dave Fitzgerald, who is also his trainer, said: “He fought Haroon Rashid last weekend and he dominated every round.
“He hit him hard to his body and the lad just could not handle his power.
“Scott weighed in at 68.5kg ahead of the fight which is the first time he has done that.
“But he looked really good and it was a really strong performance. He didn’t get out of first gear.”
A member of Team GB’s elite development squad, Fitzgerald is hoping to show that he is good enough to earn a place for this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
