It was a case of ‘daddy rules’ in the Preston College Open College Badminton Doubles Championship last week.

Kabir Sharif got the better of his son Azam in a hotly-contested final 21-18.

Sharif senior was partnered by Nabeel Nabel, who is from Malaysia and is a student at Manchester University.

Azam Sharif, who won the Preston and District Under-16s title earlier this year, formed a doubles team with Tom Reid, who is a member of Clayton Crusaders.

The competition attracted more than 50 competitors, with some players travelling from as far afield as Leicester and Manchester to take part in the annual event.

Kabir Sharif said: “It was absolutely fantastic to beat my son in the final. My wife Shanaz was supporting my son but I had my daughter Zenab on my side.

“The final was very good and very close. Nabeel and I managed to win 21-18.

“My son was gutted to lose, especially to his dad.”
