Kirkham Grammar School youngsters earned the county champions crown for Wyre and Fylde in the Lancashire Tennis Championships at South Ribble Tennis Centre.

The Second Year team, made up of two girls and two boys, represented the Wyre and Fylde.

In all, 12 schools represented different districts from around Lancashire who had won their local tournaments held earlier.

Districts represented were West Lancs, South Ribble, Chorley, Rossendale, Hyndburn, Ribble Valley, Blackburn and Darwin, Preston, Blackpool and Lancaster.

The tournament was divided into two sections. Matches were 12 minutes in length scored on a tie-break system.

Girls and boys played singles against other districts.

All points scored in matches went towards an overall total for each school. The four highest-scoring schools would compete in the semi-finals.

The Wyre and Fylde team was made up of Lucie Ethell, Alyssia Dockerty, Lewis Fraser and Joe Thomson and they played well against some very tough opposition.

They held their nerve, winning the majority of matches or just narrowly losing by a few points.

Ethell and Dockerty won a number of their matches by a large margin, which boosted the Wyre and Fylde score and helped the KGS youngsters make it through to the final four.

In the semi-final, Wyre and Fylde played against Balshaw’s School who represented South Ribble District and all four KGS youngsters won their matches.

That meant they met Blackpool District in the final.

When KGS had played them in the section, they had lost 3-1 in matches so it was a tough draw.

However, all Kirkham players stepped up their game and won three of the four matches to see Wyre and Fylde crowned champions.
