Known as the year of the Winter of Discontent, 1978 was quite the 12 months.

So travel back in time and take a look at a few of our best archive pictures of life in Preston in that heady year...

These five lovely ladies were at Preston Stadium to launch a competition to win a Christmas hamper. To win you had to forecast the result of a race beetween the greyhouds the girls entered. It won't all be singing for the lads of Preston Catholic College Choir when they visit Loreto, Italy, to represent Great Britain at the 18th International Choir Festival, for they will be required to also offer traditional entertainment, dressed in the appropriate costume. The lads, under the the College's head of music, Mr Harry Duckworth, have chosen to be Morris dancer for the occasion
