Piers Morgan has said he still doesn’t believe the Duchess of Sussex after he left Good Morning Britain following his controversial comments he made about her interview with Oprah Winfrey.

In an interview with Winfrey aired in the US on Sunday (7 March) and the UK on Monday (8 March), Meghan Markle discussed her life as a working royal and said she reached a point where she “didn’t want to be alive anymore”.

However, on Monday’s Good Morning Britain show, Morgan said he “didn’t believe a word of it”.

The presenter now faces an Ofcom investigation after the regulator received 41,000 complaints in response to his comments.

Although Morgan has now left the show, he has said he still stands by his comments about the duchess.

He wrote on Twitter on Wednesday morning: “On Monday, I said I didn’t believe Meghan Markle in her Oprah interview. I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don’t. If you did, OK. Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on. Thanks for all the love, and hate. I’m off to spend more time with my opinions.”

‘It is certainly going to be very different but shows go and so on we go’

Morgan’s departure from Good Morning Britain comes after he walked off the set of the show earlier in the day on Tuesday (9 March), after a heated discussion with his colleague, Alex Beresford.

Beresford criticised him for "continuing to trash" the duchess.

Opening the show on Wednesday’s Good Morning Britain (11 March), Susanna Reid said presenting without Morgan “is certainly going to be very different but shows go and so on we go."

Addressing Morgan’s departure from the show, Reid said : "Now, Piers and I have disagreed on many things and that dynamic was one of the things viewers loved about the programme.

"He is without doubt an outspoken, challenging, opinionated, disruptive broadcaster.

"He has many critics and he has many fans. You will know that I disagreed with him about Meghan's interview. He himself clarified his comments about her mental health on the show yesterday."

"But now Piers has decided to leave the programme. Some of you may cheer and others may boo,” she added.

ITV released a statement on Tuesday which said: "Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain.

"ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add."
