Fire and police patrols are to be stepped up in the Plungington area of Preston after a spate of deliberate fires.

Firefighters from Preston fire station were called out to the area on Sunday night to fires involving wheelie bins, trees and rubbish.

Crews were first called out at around 6.15pm and received calls throughout the night in to the early hours of the morning.

The incidents were in Greenbank Street, Brook Street, Villiers Street and the surrounding areas.

Aerosols and possibly fireworks had been put on top of some of the fires.

Watch manager Mark Woodward from Preston fire station said: “Aerosols are extremely dangerous - if they explode they would cause injury to us, members of the public and the people lighting them.

“This sort of behaviour is unacceptable to ourselves, the police and the residents.

“The public can rest assured if there are further incidents they can dial 999 and request our attendance. We will be putting initiatives in place and identifying the youths.”
