Galloway’s Society for the Blind, which is based in Penwortham, received a £1,500 donation after being recommended by colleagues at the Yorkshire Building Society’s branch on Fishergate.

The money will be used to buy a haul of new equipment to help its members experience the great outdoors and stay confident when they’re online.

Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation is funded through the Small Change Big Difference scheme where members donate the pennies from the interest on their accounts just once a year to help smaller charities around the UK.

Roya Armstrong, community fund-raiser at Galloways, said: “Thanks to the generosity of Yorkshire Building Society members we’ve been able to buy new waterproofs and hiking boots which will be loaned out to new members who want to take part in our outdoor activities but don’t have their own kit.

“Technology can make life so much easier for people with sight problems and we’re delighted we’ve also been able to buy specially adapted hardware and software to meet our members’ needs.”

The Charitable Foundation supports registered UK charities that work to improve health, save lives and alleviate poverty with donations of up to £2,000.

Steve Robinson, manager of the Preston branch of Yorkshire Building Society, said: “We’re really proud to be able to support Galloway’s - the work they do transforms the lives of people in our community with sight loss.

“At Yorkshire Building Society we passionately believe in doing what we can to create a positive, lasting impact on society and our Charitable Foundation is one of the ways we can do that. If you know a charity that could benefit please pop into our branch on Fishergate to find out more.”

Lancashire Post and Galloway’s are joining forces for an appeal - Gallowheels - to raise £50,000 for a new minibus.
