Holmes Mill in Clitheroe is set to be converted into the headquarters of the Bowland Brewery Company.

The redundant textile mill will be changed into a major leisure and tourism complex after the scheme was given the green light by Ribble Valley Council.

It approved the plans submitted by James Warburton, of Emporia Leisure Ltd, to transform Holmes Mill in Clitheroe into a 31-bedroomed hotel with a restaurant, bar, bakery, and a spa and gym leisure complex.

Mr Warburton, managing director of James’ Places said: “Bowland Brewery is at the very heart of the scheme.

“In fact if it hadn’t been for the brewery I don’t think I would have ever purchased the mill in the first place.”

The news comes in the nick of time as the first parts of the new brewery plant have already been delivered. The pressure is to get the building ready to accept the new kit, which at 30 brewers barrels is substantially bigger than the existing seven barrel plant.

This major investment in the brewery, estimated at £350,000, is needed in order to expand production to keep up with demand.

The new site will also have a beer hall, to showcase the brewery’s products, a multi-function room that one day might be a cinema and the next day a cookery school or exhibition space.

The building work to the brewery and beer hall is expected to take three months to complete.

The bakery, smokehouse and deli are expected to follow shortly.

The second and third phases of the development will see the creation of the hotel and urban spa in the former weaving shed and will take a year to complete.

Bowland Brewery was founded in 2003 and announced its move to the Holmes Mill complex in the centre of Clitheroe in 2015.
