Police believed she was travelling in a Ford Fiesta when she was involved in a minor collision with the central reservation which meant she could not start the car again.

She then got out to check the damage and was then involved in the collision with a HGV.

Motorists are being warned to avoid the area, which is a busy route for commuters travelling from Wigan into Manchester, as officers are still at the scene and there are likely to be delays for some time.

PC Paul Hailwood from the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) serious collision investigation unit said: “I would like to extend my most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of this young woman.
