This is why the air ambulance landed at Bamber Bridge Conservative Club last night

Emergency services were called to the club in Cranbourne Street at 6.30pm after a man in his mid-50s fell backwards down a number of steps and hit his head before losing consciousness.

Paramedics in a rapid response vehicle were first to the scene, where they were swiftly joined by an ambulance crew.

Medics then requested the air ambulance, which touched down on the Conservative Club's bowling green shortly before 7pm.

But whilst waiting for help to arrive, the club's secretary Katie Mercer, 30 - a trained nurse - rushed to the man's aid.

Joined by her cousin Simon Skipper, 52 - a committee member and qualified first aider - the pair put their emergency training into action and gave the man CPR.

She told the Post: "It happened inside the club when he suddenly fell backwards down three steps.

"I am a trained nurse and myself and my cousin Simon Skipper, who is a first aider, commenced CPR whilst waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

"We were able to bring him back around by the time they came and took him to hospital."

The man, who sits on the club's committee, was then taken by road ambulance to Royal Preston Hospital, where staff say Katie and Simon's quick-thinking might have saved his life.

He remains in a serious but stable condition.

"He is such a lovely man and a big part of the club. He would do anything for anyone," said Katie.

An ambulance spokesman said: "We were called to an incident in Bamber Bridge at 6.31pm and attended with an ambulance, rapid response vehicle and air ambulance.

"A man in his mid-50s was taken by road to Royal Preston Hospital with a serious head injury following a fall."
