WATER LATEST: Four weeks in and still no confirmed crypto cases

Work was still going on last night to fit five remaining ultra-violet rigs at key points on the water system to kill off the last traces. One of the sites was in Haighton near Preston where United Utilities has underground storage.

There was still no sign of the alert being lifted today, with United Utilities continuing to apologise for the inconvenience caused to more than 300,000 households and companies.

With threat of the scare continuing into next week, schools in the affected area have started making contingency plans in case they are without drinking water when they reopen after the summer break.

A meeting will be held in the next 48 hours between education chiefs and United Utilities to discuss the situation.

Chorley MP Lindsay Hoyle has written to Defra and the Commons Select Committee urging them to launch an inquiry.
