The Micra was then involved in a crash with an oncoming Volkswagen van.

The driver of the Micra, a 82-year-old man, suffered spinal injuries and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital where he remained on Monday morning.

The driver of the van, a 34-year-old man, suffered whiplash as a result of the crash.

Officers are appealing for any witnesses.

PS Nigel Ralphson of the Road Policing Unit said: “We are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed this collision and would urge them to get in touch.

“I’d particularly like to speak to the occupants of the parked car that the Micra overtook immediately before the collision occurred and also the occupants of a green transit-style works van which was the first vehicle to pass the scene after the collision.

“It was travelling generally north towards Tanterton Hall Road.‎”
