Professor Thomas said the Preston based university will join other universities to lobby government about sustainable funding.

He said: “I also feel the university has an important role to play in these uncertain times by advocating tolerance, inclusion and compassion as the nation begins the process of healing its deep divide.”

He acknowledged: “The result jeopardises some key funding streams – research funding and student mobility funding. It is important that those are either strongly defended, or that alternative streams are found. I am a passionate believer that Britain remains globally competitive in the knowledge economy and at the forefront of scientific discovery.”

He said EU student fees will be pegged at home student levels for those enrolling in 2016 and 2017. A priority will be to convince Government to ensure EU staff and students can continue to work and study here and to promote UK as a welcoming destination for the brightest and best minds.
