Tulip Days wow visitors to city nursery

It was time for more than a tiptoe through the tulips when plantsman Matthew Smith held his first ever Tulip Open Days at his city nursery.

The award winning grower, who has scooped gold at Chelsea for the past three years, opened the doors of Brighter Blooms at Walton le Dale to showcase the wide range of tulips he grows, shows and sells.

He also set up a display of easy to grow salad leaves and offered a range of plants and summer flowering bulbs for sale.

The recent two day event, attended by hundreds of people, included nursery tours and also helped raise funds for two local charities through the sale of cakes and drinks.

Matthew said: “The café was good fun to run and well enjoyed by everyone. Over the weekend we raised a fantastic £306.25 which will be split between the two charities we support – Rosemere Cancer Foundation and Motivation Foundation Romania.”

The nursery, which usually opens to the public by appointment only, also specialises in Zantedeschias (Calla).

Now Matthew is looking forward to next week's Harrogate Spring Flower Show where he will have a stand.
