His grandson, Stephen Hardman, said David would always help people with his van, and was well known in the Meadow Street area where he owned a fish and chip shop.

He said: “He was married to his soulmate, my step gran Rose, they absolutely adored one another and that’s the worst bit really, that partnership has been broken up.

“It was so sudden because he left the house that day fit and full of life, I really expected him to reach 100.

“He was an expert driver and I know in that moment he was doing his best to stop others getting injured because that was him all over. We will all miss him terribly, he was a beautiful man from the inside out always happy. For me he was and always will be an inspiration, he taught me that no matter what life throws at you and how bad things get, just to smile and be thankful for life, he loved life and I loved him.”
