A 26-year-old roads worker was killed in a collision with a digger at a site in Lancashire.

Edward Fitzgerald was working with contractors on the hard shoulder of the M6 northbound carriageway at Garstang, when the accident happened, at 6.15pm on Wednesday.

Mr Fitzgerald, of Heysham, received serious injuries after being involved in a collision with a mobile digger.

Paramedics and the air ambulance attended the scene but his injuries proved fatal and he died shortly after being airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital.

His sister Patricia Stanley said:“Since our mother passed away many years ago, Eddie and I have been like mother and son.

“He was a gentle giant who was always there for me and would do anything you asked of him.

“He had so many friends and was liked by everyone he met.

“I have no words to describe the loss we all feel as he was such a big part of all our lives.

“He was like a big brother to my children and was always full of jokes and fun. He looked after us all and was generous with all that he did for us.

“Eddie, we all love you and you will be always in our thoughts.”

Both the coroner and the Health and Safety Executive have been told.
