A lane was closed on the southbound M6 following a vehicle fire, say Highways England.
Fire services and police attended the incident at junction 32 at around 5.00am this morning.
Two engines from Preston and Fulwood attended the blaze which completely destroyed a Ford Escort van, say fire services.
The lane was closed for around 30 mins while emergency services dealt with the fire.
Firefighters used two hose-reel jets to extinguish the blaze.
A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue said: "The driver was alerted to a problem by a passing HGV who saw smoke and sparks coming from the van driver's vehicle.
"We believe this fire started accidentally in the engine compartment of the van. Thankfully, the driver was able to escape his vehicle quickly.
All lanes have now re-opened.
Nobody was injured during the incident.
