A driver and a 12-year-old passenger are both in hospital with serious injuries following a road crash which brought rush hour traffic chaos to parts of Preston on Friday.

The youngster was flown by air ambulance to Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool with head injuries following the accident on the Golden Way bypass in Penwortham at shortly after 4pm.

The driver was taken by ambulance to the Royal Preston Hospital where he underwent surgery for a fractured pelvis and a broken leg.

Two other passengers in the vehicle, a 12-year-old and a 13-year-old, both escaped serious injury.

The incident closed the bypass near to its junction with Strand Road and there were long hold-ups well into the evening as traffic was diverted around the scene.
