Two men have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a nine-year-old girl died following a collision in Lancashire.

The victim was airlifted from the scene in Bacup Road, Rawtenstall to hospital in Blackburn, but died shortly after.

Police investigating the collision, which happened shortly after 5pm on Friday, said a 22-year-old man from the Rossendale area and a 19-year-old from Rawtenstall were arrested and were in custody.

Sgt David Hurst of the Road Policing Unit said: “This is a tragic incident in which a little girl has very sadly lost her life and my thoughts remain with her family at this extremely difficult time.

“An investigation is underway to establish exactly how the collision occurred and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed what happened to contact us as soon as possible.

“We are also keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the white Audi A5 travelling in the vicinity prior to the collision.”
