A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: "Occupants thankfully OK including their dog. The motorway was closed northbound owing to diesel spill.

"Thanks to police, fire, ambulance, highways and Macadams for their help. Also thanks to drivers who stopped to help."

The carriageway reopened shortly before 4pm after a diesel spill was cleaned by motorway crews, and traffic has now returned to normal.
