Severe delays of up to an hour following massive pile-up on M6 northbound at junction 29 as wintry showers lead to icy conditions on Lancashire roads

Eye witnesses have reported scenes of 'absolute carnage' on the M6 northbound near Preston after a pile up of more than 20 cars as snow showers battered the area late this afternoon.

The reports of a major collision came shortly after the Met Office had issued a yellow warning for Lancashire, with forecasters predicting an evening of wintry showers and icy conditions for motorists.

Witnesses took to social media to post warnings to other drivers of severe queues on the M6 northbound between junction 29 at Bamber Bridge and junction 30 at Preston.

The incident is understood to have happened at around 4pm. The Lancashire Post has attempted to contact Highways England for further comment.

It is understood there are currently severe delays of up to an hour around the scene, with congestion backing up on the M65 and junction 9 of the M61.

Stephanie Hayward-Bailey posting on Facebook wrote: "At least 10 car accident at the junction and another four cars further up. Looks like most people okay from what I could see on the other side."

Other motorists have spoken of the difficult driving conditions following an afternoon of hail and snow showers.
