Lancaster railway station has been named as one of the worst in the country for train delays.

According to information from website, which analyses train movements, Lancaster came fifth worst in the country when recently checked, with the average delay recorded on Thursday, February 13 as 24 minutes per train, with 279 late trains per day.

“The current weather of storms, high winds and floods are without doubt having a significant effect,” the company said.

Aidan Turner-Bishop from the Campaign for Better Transport Lancashire, said that statistics needed to be treated with care, and that a lot of work was taking place to improve rail services in the North West.

He said: “I think the statistics need looking at, because there’s been a lot of disturbance recently. and Lancaster station is where all the West Coast Mainline trains go to.

“You can’t help it if a tree falls on the line, or someone commits suicide. That delay then travels from the south to the north.”

He added: “You do get some delays though on the smaller branch lines due to a lot of congestion.

“Trains start to over-run and they turn back before reaching their final destination, which is really, really maddening for travellers.

“To stop this, there has to be extra capacity - doubled lines, faster, electric trains and the removal of bottle necks.

“A lot of money is already being spent on doing this, including a new curve in Salford, to stop the bottleneck around Manchester Oxford Road.”

The worst station in the country over the same period was found to be Heyford in Oxford, which had an average delay of 33 minutes per train, and 181 late trains.
