Pedestrian dies after being hit by HGV on the M56

Emergency services rushed to a "serious collision" on the M56 eastbound between junctions 14 (Chester services) and 12 (Liverpool Airport) at around 5.30am this morning (May 18).

North West Motorway Police, Cheshire Police and North West Ambulance Service attended the scene, along with traffic officers who closed a section of the motorway.

The collision involved a pedestrian and an HGV tanker which was travelling in the direction of Runcorn.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: "At around 5.30am on Monday 18 May police were called to reports of a collision on the M56 in Cheshire, between junctions 12 and 14.

"On arrival it was found that an HGV tanker, travelling in the direction of Runcorn, had been involved in a collision with a pedestrian.

"The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene."

The driver of the HGV was uninjured and liaised with officers at the scene, according to police.

The M56 was closed while collision investigation work took place.

The road has since reopened but delays have been reported and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
