The heart-stopping footage was captured by 62-year-old Barrie Crampton, a car salesman from Preston, as he was test driving a car at around 11am on Saturday , August 1.

"I was in a traffic jam where you come off at the Tickle Trout when something caught my eye in my wing mirror," Barrie said.

"When I looked in my rear view mirror I saw this campervan coming up the hard shoulder. I thought he had fallen asleep or his brakes had gone or something.

"I was positioned in the lane to come off at the next junction which meant I was nearer to the white line, so I knew if I didn't shift quick he was going to hit me."

In the footage Barrie can be seen quickly swerving out of the vehicle's way, a reaction that may have prevented a potentially serious collision.

Following the incident, Barrie - who was able verify the vehicle's details by slowing the footage down - reported the incident to police.

He added: "It was just an insane manoeuvre because if he'd have hit me or anybody at that speed it would have caused a massive pile up.

"He could've killed a lot of people."

Rule 267 of the Highway Code states you should only overtake unless you are sure it is safe and legal to do so.

Lancashire Police have been approached for comment.
