Emergency services were called to the scene of the accident which involved a car and a motorbike at around 4.30pm on Friday, May 18.

Christine Jones says she was travelling home on her motorbike on the southbound carriageway when she was involved in the collision at the junction of the M61.

The 57-year-old says she was shocked to suddenly find herself lying on the road, with passing traffic narrowly missing her, seemingly unaware of the accident.

But thanks to the actions of a passerby, who stopped her minibus to shield her, she was spared further injury as she lay on the busy road.

The retired micro-biology lecturer, has now given thanks to the passerby, Elaine Rose, and to the emergency services who helped in the aftermath.

The former Manchester Metropolitan University lecturer said: "I was on the motorway on my way home when I suddenly found myself on the ground.

"I was completely stunned. But a passing nurse and a fireman stopped to help me, and because I had them there I felt safe.

"We were unsure of the extent of my injuries, so I was advised not to move before the paramedics attended.

"Elaine had been travelling behind on the road and saw the accident. She later told me later it looked horrendous.

"She placed her minibus near me to stop and shield me from other traffic as she had seen several cars, unaware of my presence, narrowly miss me.

"She potentially saved my life and I am very grateful for her quick thinking.

"If she hadn't done that, it could have been much worse. We've been in touch, and I've thanked her personally for helping me.

"Paramedics arrived and checked me over and thankfully, bar a few bruises and possible cracked ribs I was ok.

"I went to hospital, but was home again on the same day."

The experienced motorcyclist, who has been riding bikes for 40 years, says she owes her lack of injuries to protective clothing and is now appealing for drivers to be aware of bikers when out and about.

She said: "Please look out for bikers on the roads. I know its sometimes hard to see them, but please be aware of us.

"And for motorcyclists, I think the reason I walked away from the crash was due to my protective clothing. Please make sure you dress appropriately."
