M65 briefly closed after mattress is dumped in middle of motorway

Police were forced to close the M65 yesterday evening (September 6) after an old mattress was found dumped in the middle of the motorway.

Officers were called to the dangerous obstruction on a stretch of the M65 at around 6.30pm on Sunday.

The motorway was briefly closed whilst Highways were called to recover the mattress and other bits of debris that had been scattered across the carriageway.

"Driving tired? Maybe the M65 isn’t the place for a mattress!", quipped Lancashire Road Police on social media.

"Thanks for your patience whilst we cleared the obstruction. M65 now fully re-opened."

The mattress and other rubbish was swiftly cleared and motorists were able to resume their journeys at 6.50pm.

On the western side of Lancashire's motorway network, police closed the M55 overnight after a fatal crash at around 9pm last night.

The M55 remains closed this morning and is not expected to reopen until midday as police continue to investigate.
