Two lanes were initially shut between the two junctions, but the closure has now been extended to all three southbound lanes. The M6 entry slip at J36 (Kendal) has also been closed, preventing access to the southbound carriageway.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: "We are currently dealing with a multiple vehicle road traffic collision on the M6 in Carnforth.

"All three lanes of the southbound carriageway may be closed for some time, causing traffic disruption, motorists are advised to avoid the area."

An ambulance spokesman added: "We were called at 7.56am and attended with an ambulance. A male was taken to hospital with minor injuries."

Highways said it is likely that the closure will remain in place for a minimum of 45 minutes, with the scene expected to be cleared by 10am.
