M6 closed after after car 'crashes into bridge' near Carnforth

The M6 was closed at around 5.40pm after a car "collided with a bridge" near Carnforth yesterday (May 26).

Emergency services including police, fire and paramedics were called to the scene.

The incident occurred on the M6 northbound at junction 35 (Carnforth Interchange).

Highways have confirmed the incident has been cleared.

A spokesperson for Highways said: "This incident has now been concluded and the carriageway at J35 is now re-open.

"Thanks for your patience and have a safe onward journey."

Lancaster Police urged motorists to avoid the area.

They also appealed for witnesses and dash cam footage to help with their enquiries.

A Lancaster Area Police spokesperson said: "At the M6 northbound junction 35. The north side has been closed due to a accident. All emergency vehicles are at the scene.

"Please avoid the area. Follow the diversion on the A6 north to pick the M6 junction 36 .

"If anyone saw the accident could they contact 101 plus any dash cam footage to help with inquiries."

Highways England said they were working with the emergency services to get traffic moving.

A spokesperson for AA said: "Main roadway closed and slow traffic due to serious accident, a car involved on M6 northbound at J35 A601(M) (Carnforth).

"The main carriageway was closed at around 17:40 following a car colliding with a bridge."
