The Scania lorry overturned on the M6 northbound exit slip road at junction 25 (Wigan, A49) at around 9am this morning (April 23).

The driver has escaped from the crash unscathed, but recovery is proving difficult due to the position of the lorry under the bridge.

Recovery teams are having to drag the stricken HGV out from under the bridge before it can be righted.

The crash has also led to a large oil spillage which has to be treated before the road can be reopened.

Highways said there is also damage to the road barrier and the bridge itself, which is currently being assessed by maintenance teams.

The agency has warned that the slip road is likely to be closed until later this afternoon.

A Highways spokesman said: "Recovery are having to drag the vehicle out from under the bridge, then we can start work on spillages and damage done to the barrier and bridge itself.

"Thankfully no injuries on this one.

"We have teams at the scene ready to clear up the spillage to ensure the area is safe before re-opening the slip road."
