Traffic on the M6 was brought to a standstill by a broken down horsebox.
The incident happened between junction 29 for the M65 and junction 28 at Leyland at around 10am today.
Police and Highways Agency officers brought traffic to a temporary halt to allow the horses to be transferred to a replacement vehicle.
The rolling roadblock on both the north and southbound carriageways was put in place to avoid the animals being spooked.
The motorway was expected to return to normal by 11.15am
However, delays remain for travellers north of Preston with heavy congestion on the M6 around Lancaster.
The Highways agency reported delays of up to 40 minutes for northbound traffic between junctions 32 and 34.
