Five miles of congestion on M6 following crash involving 'two lorries' near junction 25

Two lorries were reportedly involved in a collision on the M6 northbound near Wigan today (April 9).

The M6 northbound was closed between junctions 25 (Ashton Interchange) and 25 (Bryn Interchange) at around 1pm.

The southbound side was also held until around 1.40pm due to one of the lorries carrying a "hazardous substance".

In an update posted at 5.50pm, Highways England confirmed they were in the process of reopening the carriageway.

"The M6 northbound at J25 (Wigan A49) closure is currently in the process of being reopened," a spokesman said.

"Thank you for your patience."

Police, paramedics and firefighters were called to the scene and motorists were advised to avoid the area if possible.

60 minute delays and five miles of bumper-to-bumper traffic was reported in the area following the collision.

Details of any injuries has not yet been released.
