Crash on M6 causes four-mile tailbacks and 60 minute delays between Preston and Lancaster

A crash involving two cars on the M6 resulted in tailbacks of nearly five miles between Preston and Lancaster.

Emergency services were called to reports two cars had been involved in a collision on the M6 northbound between junctions 32 (Broughton Interchange) and 33 (Hampson Green Interchange) at approximately 1.30pm this afternoon (September 21).

Two of three lanes were closed following the smash, reportedly resulting in nearly five miles of congestion and one hour delays, but all lanes reopened shortly before 3.20pm.

Highways England had warned motorists travelling towards Lancaster, Kendal and the Lake District to plan ahead in order to avoid the incident.

A spokesman for Highways England said: "If travelling in Lancashire this afternoon please be aware there are long delays on the M6 northbound due to this incident.

"There are approximately 4.5 miles of congestion which is expected to add at least one hour onto usual travel times."
