Two fire engines from Preston attended the scene to rescue the patient from the vehicle.

"Firefighters assessed one casualty and extricated the patient using holmatro cutters and spreaders, milwaukee power tools and a tool kit," a spokesman said.

"Crews were in attendance for one hour and twenty minutes."

Motorists were warned of heavy traffic in the area and were advised to find alternative routes.

The road reopened nearly two hours later at approximately 11.40am.
