The M65 was fully re-opened in both directions at just before 10am today after a multi-vehicle collision during the night.
After an eight-hour delay police were able to lift the total closure of the westbound carriaegway between junction 4 for Blackburn and 3 for Hoghton, which also affected the outside lane of the eastbound carriageway.
Workmen were at the scene throughout the night repairing the central barrier which was badly damaged in the incident.
Reports say one of the vehicles overturned in the collision just after 2am, but police have so far not released details of any casualties.
A detour was in place to take westbound traffic off the motorway at Blackburn and back on at Hoghton.
Four fire crews attended the scene, but no-one was trapped. Instead they helped paramedics with casualties.
Investigations are continuing and police have issued an appeal for anyone who saw the collision to contact them on 101.
