Callum Evans, 19, from Lostock Hall, has been on a life-support machine for almost a month in Manchester’s Wythenshawe Hospital following a collision between his bike and a car on Glazebrook Lane, Culcheth, near Warrington.

But his grandma Audrey Allen says her grandson’s condition has slightly improved over the past few days and she says the family are hoping for a full recovery.

“There’s been the first signs of recovery as he’s started to breath on his own,” she said. “He had been moved onto a special machine to help him but he’s now been taken off it.

“They’ve started to move him onto his front which is helping remove a lot of the bad stuff from his lungs. It’s good signs but there’s still some way to go.”

Callum had been on an intensive care unit machine which carried out extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

It provides both cardiac and respiratory support to someone whose heart and lungs are unable to sustain life.

“His injuries were horrendous so we’re taking it day by day,” said Audrey. “Doctors say he’ll stay on life support until his lungs are strong enough but I think we’re getting nearer to that. His eyes have opened and he’s started blinking but he might be there all summer.”

The family are now raising money for the North West Air Ambulance, who lifted Callum to hospital after the crash, and tonight at the Three Sister’s Race track in Wigan a slow lap will take place at 6pm in Callum’s honour.
