Firefighters rescue Rosie the pony from her mud bath in Hoghton

Rosie the pony was rescued after becoming trapped in mud in Hoghton this afternoon.

Firefighters from Darwen, who specialise in rescuing animals, took an hour to drag the 14 year old out of her predicament.

She was spotted by a passerby who alerted the fire and rescue team. A crew from Blackburn also attended to lend a hand.

Watch manager Darrell Sturgees said: “She had wondered out to a part of the field that she had never wondered into before and got stuck.

“It was just mud but they tend to get stuck and then trash about and go down and can’t get out. Once they’re stuck they sit and wait.

“Its potentially very dangerous to get them out because as soon as you start to get them free they will thrash about again.”

The fire brigade had been called to help Rosie, who was in a field near Hoghton Tower, at about 2pm.

Her owner is now fencing off that part of the field to make sure Rosie does not take another mud bath.

“She was having a shower when we left so she was quite happy,” added Mr Sturgees.
