The woman, in her early 60s, was walking her pet in Marsh Lane, Longton, when the construction machinery fell from a passing tractor, police said.

She was taken to hospital after emergency services were called to reports of serious injuries at around 3.40pm, but she only suffered a minor foot injury, the force said.

The tractor's driver, who pulled over, now faces grilling from officers about the safety of his load, it is understood.

A police spokeswoman said: "The roller rolled across the road and she tried to get out the way, but it hit her.

"They thought it was quite serious but it just hit her foot."

One witness said he believed the tractor 'became separate from the huge roller it was towing, and the roller flattened a woman on the pavement'.

He said the road was blocked for around an hour.
